YOUNG, DALLAS M.

YOUNG, DALLAS M. (15 Jan. 1914-23 July 1990) professor of labor relations and a national figure in the field, was born in Christopher, Illinois, the son of Arvel and Jennie Jordan Young. He graduated from Southern Illinois Teachers College in 1936 with a B. Ed. degree and attended the University of Illinois, receiving an A.M. in 1936 and a Ph.D. in 1941.During WORLD WAR II, Young was an industrial relations analyst for the National War Labor Board 1941-45.Appointed to the Regional Wage Stabilization Board in 1951, he mediated wage disputes in Ohio and Kentucky during the KOREAN WAR.From 1948 to 1984 Young was a professor of economics and labor relations at Western Reserve University where he became a widely-known expert on urban transportation and the use of arbitration to resolve labor disputes.He umpired disputes between the Cleveland Transit System and the local Amalgamated Transit Union for five years and also served on the CTS Board of Trustees 1968-70, during which time he tried unsuccesfully to find alternate sources of revenue for the failing system to prevent a succession of transit fare increases.

Young and his wife, Christina, were married 13 August 1939, and they had a son, Dallas Jr.After their divorce, he married Evelyn Stiles 1 March 1974.He died at his Cleveland residence, and his body was taken to Mulkeytown, Illinois for burial.
