WEINBERGER, WILLIAM SIDNEY (8 Feb. 1913 - 8 Aug. 1996) a casino industry leader and philanthropist, was president of Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas and Bally's Park Place in Atlantic City, NJ, and a founder of Bluecoats, Inc. He was born in Cleveland and lived in HOUGH, but spent much of his early childhood in the HAYMARKET neighborhood where his parents, Malvina (Glucksberg) and Isidore Weinberger, operated a series of restaurants. In 1935, Weinberger graduated from Western Reserve University, where he starred on the swim team. He joined the family business, owning and operating both Kornman's Restaurant on SHORT VINCENT and the Hickory Grill Restaurant until 1963 when he became vice-president of the Charle Corp. In 1966, he invested in the newly opened Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas and for two years served as vice president of food and beverage, then president of Caesar's from 1968 to 1977 when he moved to New Jersey to become president of Bally's Park Place in Atlantic City. After 11 years in that post, Weinberger returned to Las Vegas to become Ambassador Emeritus to the Mirage Resorts, Inc., helping attract customers to both the Mirage and Golden Nugget casino-hotels from 1988 to 1996. Known for his dignity and grace, he frequently mingled with guests and employees, and established close friendships with entertainers and national leaders. He was active in civic and industry affairs, helping to establish Bluecoats, Inc., an organization to help the families of police officers and firefighters killed in the line of duty. He served on the executive committee of the Nevada Resort Association, the board of directors of the American Cancer Society, the National Conference of Christians and Jews, and the Las Vegas Combined Jewish Appeal. He was chairman of the corporate division of United Fund in 1974 and vice-president of United Way in 1976. He received numerous awards, including the NCCJ's Distinguished Merit Award in 1968, and B'nai B'rith's Man of the Year award in 1972. In 1937 Weinberger married Jean Zinner, who died in 1993. They had two children: Barbara and William D. Weinberger died at home and is buried in Las Vegas.
