MORIARTY, ELAINE M. (11 Dec. 1899-25 Apr. 1994) was noted community volunteer who worked with numerous social service organizations.
She was born Elaine McElroy in Port Huron, Michigan, the daughter of William P. and Mabel (Chambers) McElroy. She was a descendant of Great Lakes ship captains. Her family moved to Lakewood when her father became superintendent of the Pittsburgh Steamship fleet. She graduated from Lakewood High School, the University of Michigan (in 1923), and then Western Reserve University. At the latter she earned a master's degree at the School of Applied and Social Sciences in 1925. Afterwards she worked as a counselor at the FAMILY SERVICE ASSN.
On 21 April 1926 in Cuyahoga County she married Wilson Harold Moriarty who later served as a vice-president and director of the National Castings Co.
Mrs. Moriarty was known for devoting a great deal of her time to community volunteer work, especially with social service organizations. She headed numerous organizations over the years including the Neighborhood Settlement Association, the FRIENDLY INN SOCIAL SETTLEMENT, the Shaker Heights Community Council, the Cleveland USO, the Cleveland Welfare Federation, the Cleveland YWCA, and the Hudson Boy's Farm. She also served on boards of many additional organizations.
Her husband died in 1981. She died in Cleveland and was buried at Hillcrest Cemetery. Moriarty was survived by a daughter, Jane M. Breckling, and a son, Wilson P. Moriarty.
