The LADIES TRACT SOCIETY (est. 30 Oct. 1830) was the local branch of the American Tract Society, organized in New York in 1825 to distribute Christian leaflets and pamphlets, or "tracts." REBECCA ROUSE, an agent of the national organization, created the Cleveland society. Her husband, BENJAMIN ROUSE, was the local agent for the American Sunday School Union & Tract Society, and their home was a depository for that society's publications. Little information is available about the Ladies Tract Society in Cleveland, but its work most likely resembled that of the national movement, distributing religious material and promoting piety and morality. The society's duration is unclear, but it does not appear in the 1837 city directory.
