HOWELL AND THOMAS

HOWELL AND THOMAS was an architectural firm active in Cleveland from 1916-30. Carl Eugene Howell (1879-17 June 1930) was born in Columbus, OH, and died in Monrovia, CA. He attended Ohio State Univ. and studied drawing at the Columbus Art School. Jas. Wm. Thomas, Jr. (8 Nov. 1876-18 June 1973), was born in Wilkes-Barre, PA, and died in Hudson, OH. He attended the Univ. of Pennsylvania and graduated in 1904. The firm of Howell & Thomas was formed in Columbus in 1908, where they designed a number of large residences and East High School. Beginning in the 1910s, they designed many homes in the Euclid Golf subdivision (Fairmount Blvd.) that was being developed by Barton Deming in CLEVELAND HTS. They soon moved their office to Cleveland and began designing homes throughout the Heights area.

In 1922 they planned a group of 4 demonstration homes for the Van Sweringen brothers (see VAN SWERINGEN, ORIS P. AND MANTIS J.) at Shaker and Courtland boulevards, and in 1924 they designed another 7 model homes for the Van Sweringen Co. on Parkland Dr. Some of their more important residences were built for Barton Deming, Isaac Joseph, Julius Feiss, and Albert Metzger. They designed addtions to Shaker Hts. High School (later Woodbury Jr. High) and Lakewood High School, library and auditorium buildings for Ohio Univ. at Athens, churches in Columbus, Canton, and Oxford, OH, and YWCA buildings in Cleveland, Zanesville, Brooklyn, and Houston and Beaumont, TX.
