GOULDER, HARVEY DANFORTH (7 Mar. 1853-14 June 1928), maritime lawyer and onetime sailor, advocated for harbor improvement and advised those engaged in widening the CUYAHOGA RIVER. He served on both the Cleveland Board of Industry and the Cleveland Board of Trade (later the GREATER CLEVELAND GROWTH ASSOCIATION), and acted as counsel to the Cleveland Vessel Owners' Association and the LAKE CARRIERS' ASSOCIATION. Goulder was born in Cleveland to Barbara Freeland Goulder and Christopher D. Goulder, a captain on the Great Lakes. He graduated from CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL in 1869. In the summers during and after high school, he sailed on his father's ships. Goulder studied law first with the firm of Tyler & Dennison and later with admiralty lawyer John E. Cary. He was admitted to the bar in 1875 and entered into practice first with John H. Weh, then with ALEXANDER HADDEN and others, specializing in maritime and marine insurance law. Goulder practiced with various Cleveland firms, including Goulder & Lee (1890), Goulder & Holding (1892), Goulder, Holding & Masten (1896), Goulder, Day, White, Garry and Duncan (1914), and Goulder, White and Garry (1920s). He belonged to the American Bar Association, the CLEVELAND BAR ASSOCIATION, the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, and the Cleveland Chamber of Commerce.
On 11 Nov. 1878 Goulder married Mary F. Rankin. She died in 1913, and in 1915 he married Mrs. Seabury Ford. Goulder died has his CLEVELAND HTS. residence and is buried at LAKE VIEW CEMETERY.
